It is an optical code that represents data with bars of varying widths or heights.Light from the laser inside the barcode reader is reflected from the light spaces on the barcode( the dark bars absorb the light),and the barcode reader interprets the patters of white spaces as the numbers or letters represented by the barcode.

PORTABLE BARCODE READER:
Portable barcode readers( either dedicated barcode reading devices or portable PCs with built-in barcode reading capabilities) are used by workers who need to scan barcodes while on the go.
UPC: Universal Product Code: the barcode found on packages goods in supermarkets and retail stores.
ISBN:International Standard Book Number: the barcode used with printed books.
